UPDATE ON RFP REVIEW AND SELECTION OF FREEDOM MONUMENT

The response to our RFP for the Freedom Monument – a sculptural work to be located at the front of our new headquarters in Prague – exceeded our expectations. We received more than 80 proposals, all of which were interesting, unique, and in many cases thought-provoking.

As noted earlier on our website, we extended the initial deadline for selecting the artist, so that an international panel of experts could assist RFE/RL in deciding the final form of the Monument. During this process, the committee approved a change in the overall concept, including the location of the Monument and the removal of the water feature that was prominently featured at the front of the building. Finally, after much deliberation, the committee decided not to go forward with the proposals and to revisit the project at a later date, most likely in 2009.

We at RFE/RL want to thank all of the artists who submitted designs for the Freedom Monument. The decision was not easy, and we are grateful to all of the artists for their patience and for the time and artistic thought spent in producing the proposals we received. Any further information about the project will be announced in this space.

From Central Europe to the Pacific, from the Baltic to the Black Sea, from Russia to Central Asia to the Persian Gulf, countries are struggling to overcome autocratic institutions, violations of human rights, centralized economies, ethnic and religious hostilities, regional conflicts, and controlled media. Stability -- based on democracy and free-market economies -- throughout this region is essential to global peace.
